Udupi, Oct 16, 2018: It is vitally important to take native sports to global level, said Udupi SP Laxman Nimbargi. Inaugurating south zone inter university women’s kho-kho tournament organised jointly by G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Mangalore University, he said:” It is well past the time to go ahead in branding our desi culture and sports at the international level too.”
“Many schools and colleges lack play grounds. As a result, the children spend their time in playing on mobile and computer. Lack of physical exercise will affect the physical growth of a child,” he added.
Mangalore University In charge VC Dr Kishore Kumar said:”For the first time in Karnataka, a government college is hosting a South Zone inter university tournament. The Mangalore University has maintained its quality in education. Among 700 universities of India, Mangalore University is in 10th position in sports field.”
The athletes who win medals in university level competitions will be awarded with Rs 30,000 cash and scholarship. The athletes representing university are covered under insurance as well.
Two courts each have been prepared at district stadium and St Cecily’s School for the tournament. Teams from 56 universities from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Pondicherry are participating in the tournament. The tournament will conclude on October 18.
