Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Mar 11, 2016: Speaking after inaugurating ’Nudi Habba’, a literary festival, organised jointly by the district administration and the authority, KDA -   Kannada Development Authority Chairman Dr L Hanumanthaiah said future of the children will be bright if they are given primary education in their mother tongue.

Dr L Hanumanth...Hanumanthaiah regretted that parents are under the wrong impression that the future of their children is bright and they will have better opportunities, if they are educated in the English medium. However, the medium of instruction of primary education should be mother tongue, he added.

He said, "English dominance over other languages is a false picture. There should be a single window education system. Kannada medium schools are being closed due to the increasing number of English medium schools. Parents should not forget that many great achievers all over Karnataka had their education in Kannada language."

Hanumanthaiah said the State has 65 per cent literacy rate and added that sincere efforts are needed to ensure cent per cent literacy. "In this backdrop, the teachers in Kannada medium schools play a major role. They should ensure that all children are educated. Besides, they should also pay attention to school dropouts. The government should provide all facilities for the students who are studying in Kannada medium in border districts," he observed.

He added that ’Nudi Habba’ will be organised in 25 border taluks of the State to promote Kannada culture and also create awareness among people about the importance of the language and culture.

Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Neelavara Surendra Adiga said the teachers should make sure that the children develop love for their mother tongue. The parents also should create awareness among children in this regard. Unbecoming craze of English is a sad matter and a false idea.

We should not say no to Kannada being in Karnataka. English is important as it is International language and easy to communicate with the people all over. We cannot expect everyone to speak Kannada in other State.
