Illegal sand mining: Labourer jumps into Phalguni River, dies

Bantwal, Oct 26, 2016: A labourer engaged in illegal sand mining jumps into Phalguni river on October 26, Wednesday, dies.The deceased is identified as Mohammed Shariff (30). He was a local resident of Mallarapattanna in Bantwal.
On credible information about sand mining, Bantwal police reached the spot. Shariff who was engaged in sand mining jumps into Phalguni River. He was frightened of being caught by police as they threatened him to shot alleged locals.
The police immediately informed the fire personnel and the local swimmer to rescue Shariff. But his body was recoverd from river. The locals raged over police and damaged the police vehicle. SP Borase reached the spot. Additional police were deployed and situation was brought to control.
