Udupi, Dec 24, 2011: The people of Karnataka observe the new moon day of Margashira as Yellamavasya. The day is held as sacred within the Hindu community, and devotees take bath in the sea and honor their ancestors early in the morning.

Accordingly, thousands of devotees headed to Malpe early in the morning of Dec 24 Saturday and took their holy bath. They then visited the Lord Vodabhandeshwara Temple and offered prayers to the presiding deity of that temple.

Several devotees participated in a number of rituals, during which they honoured their dead ancestors.

The police had beefed up security in that area to maintain law and order and prevent any unsavoury incidents from taking place.
