Heavy rains submerge Maravoor dam; several families in trouble

Mangalore, July 4, 2013 :  Maravoor village near Bajpe is in trouble with several houses submerging due to overflowing of Maravoor dam. Several families have been evacuated from the area.

Presently rescue operations are on with a JCB, fire brigade personnel at the site along with other authorities. Home Guards are trying to rescue the trapped people with the help of ropes.

It is learnt, the family of one Ravindra which was trapped in the flood waters have been rescued and provided shelter in a nearby temple. Presently several families are trying to provide an outlet for the rain water to flow  by breaking compound walls.

 

 

Consultant Engineer SB Mayya who was present at the site said the floods was due to heavy rains and adds precautionary measures could have averted the problem. He at the same  time points out that the problem could have been solved if a  retention wall was constructed. However it could not be materialized due to opposition from locals, he said.

Locals meanwhile recall  the problem that cropped up last year when the wall of the under construction dam has collapsed. They blame the unscientific dam construction for the problem.

 It is learnt  as many as 15 houses are in danger. The Deputy Commissioner said the emergency aid team has been rushed to the spot as soon as the information was received.
