Heavy rains disrupt normal life in undivided DK

Mangalore, July 4, 2013: Heavy rains that have been lashing various parts of the district since the past two to three days have disrupted normal life in various places. Major rivers are overflowing and there has been extensive damage to property in various places.

In Puttur a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges on July 4 in view of incessant rains. Several houses in the Tenkila Kamnaru colony are facing danger after a retention wall under construction has collapsed. The well belonging to one Damodar has collapsed while his house too is in danger. The TMC Chief Officer and other engineers have visited the affected areas.

In Udupi, fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea as the rain is likely to intensify. In Kundapur and Karkala rains have uprooted hundreds of trees.

 In Kundapur, all rivers are overflowing and  low lying areas are inundated. The Sowparnika river is flowing above danger  levels bringing in fears of floods in Kollur, Hosadu and Maravanthe.

In Karkala,the Theerthotti bridge, a vital link between Ajekar and Udupi was submerged due to heavy rains affecting normal life. Several houses too have damaged in the taluk.

In Bantwal several low lying areas have been inundated and water levels in Netravathi too has risen,. Several houses too have been damaged.

The met department sources have warned of heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours and also there would be strong winds blowing at a speed of 45 to 55 km per hour.
