Mangalore, October 22: Incessant rain which has been lashing Dakshina Kannada district since Thursday  evening continued on Friday, October 22. Several low-lying areas in the city were inundated.

Torrential rains lashing the region for past 24 hours have also paralysed general life in Mangalore and many other parts of the coastal region since Thursday night.


There had been several incidents of inundation of low lying areas, overflow of the drainage and so on. There had been artificial flooding in areas including Padil, Ashok Nagar, Bejai, Matadakani, Pumpwell, and Kodialguthu.

Several parts in the central area of the city, such as Kodialbail, Kodialgutthu, Bharatinagar, and Central Market, Carstreet, Alake, Barke, Pragathi Service station near Gujarathi School were flooded in the evening of Thursday and Friday morning with up to two feet of water after heavy overnight rain. Lack of drains further aggravated the citizens woes as roads and houses were inundated in some areas including Jeppinamogaru and Kallapu and low-lying areas of Kodialbail, Attavar and Kottara Chowki.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in Udupi district with low-lying areas getting inundated and instances of increase in sea erosion being reported from the coastal belt.


The conditions remained overcast throughout the day. Although there was no reports of loss of life or property, roads in some interior parts of the district were submerged.

Due to heavy rain a big tree, located near Mangalore City  Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh’s house, fell on the electric wire passing from there, disrupting the power supply on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at Vishal Hospital, Mannagudda around 3.00pm on Friday. The electric wire also got damaged completely in the incident and power supply has been interrupted. MESCAM and forest department personnel arrived at the spot to remove the big tree after the incident. Fire department, who visited the place after the incident, climbed the tree with the help of big ladder to cut the branches of the tree.  No one is hurt in the incident.
