Udupi: June 25, 2015: Within six months of taking charge as Udupi superintendent of police, Annamalai K has not just won the confidence of the people but has also earned the name ‘Udupi Singham’, and ‘Anna’.
Social Media is filled with messages appreciating Annamalai, especially after the police nabbed the accused in the Byndoor college girl murder case two days ago. Mr Annamalai is an IIM- Lucknow degree holder. After serving as ASP of Karkala sub division, he was promoted and posted as SP in Udupi district.
“Anna is really the Singham of Udupi. Every goonda is scared of him. He not only has good crime detection skills but has also checked criminal activities like matka, murder and theft. His network is really good,” Umanath Shetty of Korangrapady who is presently working as a hotel manager in Mumbai said. Umanath is one among the many fans of Annamalai who have appreciated his work in the social media.
Officials working in Udupi too are happy with Mr Annamalai. “His interaction with people and close ties with junior officers is appreciated by all. After he took charge as SP he has brought about a lot of change in Manipal,” an officer said.
Mr Annamalai is overwhelmed with the appreciation from the people. “I believe that a civil servant should maintain a low profile and work without being applauded. However looking at the response from the people I feel happy. This support from them motivates me to do more good work,” he said.
People are so happy that Mr Annamalai finds it difficult to visit any hotel or shop with crowds trying to click photos with him. Recently on his birthday, he received over 2000 phone calls!
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr Vishal R too is known for his efficient governance. Though Vishal stays away from the media and prefers not to be in the public eye, his way of working and achievements are appreciated by the public and officials.
“The DC does not waste time meetings officials. Instead he asks the department head to take decisions and prepare the file. Once the officer comes with the file, the DC examines it and signs if it is as per rules. He gives freedom to officials and ensures that they work within the legal framework,” an officer said.
