Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa said that Shyamasundar Shastry, 48, shot himself in the chest with a licensed revolver around 1 pm.

He was taken to hospital in Puttur before being shifted to KMC, Mangalore, where he died at 6 pm. Shyamasundar was the brother of Diwakar Shastry, the father of Anshumathi Shastry. Anshumathi has alleged that the seer sexually harassed her mother, Premalatha.

Shyamasundar was an agriculturist and associated  with Vivekananda Education Trust. According to sources, he had called the seer on Saturday evening, saying  he would meet him on Sunday evening.

Sources also said Shyamasundar was very close to the seer and was disturbed after his niece lodged a complaint against him and the subsequent arrest of his brother Diwakar Shastry and sister-in-law Premalatha on the charge of blackmailing the seer.

Anshumathi, in her complaint at Banashankari police station in Bangalore, stated that her mother Premalatha had claimed the seer and his disciples sexually harassed her.

The father of Shyamasundar and Diwakar was Eshwar Shastry. It is said he was a priest and devotee of the seer.
