Mangaluru, April 29, 2018: Haphazard and incomplete  Development works in Mangaluru has increased drastically since the city’s selection as future ready smart city. There are only seven places in the city that provide the facility of paid parking while the majority of the city is victim to haphazard parking along the roads.

Practices  of dangerous parking can be witnessed along the roads from Kadri to Bendorewell, Kankanady Junction to Bendorewell, from Milagres church to Milagres cross road, Valencia to Kankanady road and many other roads in the city.

Such haphazard parking along narrow motorcycle accessible roads leads to unnecessary problems. This prevents the possibility of allowing vehicles from the rear to move forward thus leading to traffic jams. Such irresponsibly parked vehicles stay there for hours together, bringing no respite to the traffic thickness.

Haphazard parking along the road from Navabharath circle to PVS is a daily phenomenon. This road also happens to be one with major traffic movement. There is no footpath over here due to which the pedestrians are forced to walk putting their life on risk by negotiation oncoming traffic and irresponsibly parked vehicles. Vehicles here too are driven a high speeds promoting scope for accidents.

Several shops and buildings in the city are right beside the road. A few private buildings have parking facility which is limited only to employees and customers. Small shops do not have parking areas. Therefore, customers visiting such shops park their vehicles on the road side. At some places one will find vehicles parked right beside the no parking sign.

The police keep a look out for vehicles parked on road side and lock the wheels of any vehicles indulged in this act.

“Traffic police take care to prevent traffic jams and smooth vehicle movement near circles, along with which they have other responsibilities to carry. Amidst this, they find vehicles that break the rules and book cases against them. But, the owner of the haphazardly parked vehicle shop realize that he is being a reason for creation of unnecessary problems to other commuters,” say the traffic police force.

Public pay parking facility is available from Hamilton Circle to Rao and Rao road, near Pabbas at Lalbhag, in front of old Taj Mahal, from the president Hotel near Town Hall to Clock Tower, near Kanara Chambers of Commerce, on the right hand side from Hamilton Circle to Badriya School and near the Old Bus Stand in Hampankatta. But instances have been observed where irresponsible vehicle owners not wanting to pay for parking, haphazardly park their vehicles on the road side.

Two wheelers parking price is five rupees for the first two hours. Two rupees is charged for every successive hour. Four wheelers are charged ten rupees for the first two hours followed by three rupees for every successive hour. Every year tenders are called for parking price collection. The one who gains the tender is responsible for the collection, inform revenue department officials in the corporation.

New facility: Vehicles in the city are facing problems with parking. Currently, parking facility is available at seven locations. Citizens have not sent requests for additional parking facility. Creating a new parking facility is a long process and without a system say big wigs.
