The drive was organised jointly by Udupi district administration, Tourism department, Hejamadi Gram Panchayat, Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Blue Flag Beach Development and Udupi district Coastal Beaches Development Committee.

MLA Lalaji R Mendon, who inaugurated the drive, said, “Garbage dumped beside the road, river and on the shores of beaches by public is polluting every nook and corner of the country. The garbage dumped has a very serious negative impact on animals, birds, marine flora and fauna and everything else in the bargain. It is urgent to create an awareness against dumping of waste.”

Udupi Association of Coastal Tourism President Manohar Shetty said discovery of micro plastics in fish was a serious issue.

“We must find and practice  steps to dispose the garbage in more suitable safe ways,” he urged.

Students collected plastic waste, including bottles, and other trash littered on the beaches. It was a joy to see the enthusiasm and effort of the students.
