Mangaluru, Aug 3,2017: The level crossing near Srinivas College at Pandeshwar and near the Good shed on Rosario - Hoige Bazar road, have been causing a serious inconvenience to the commuting public, especially during morning hours when people are rushing for work. The crossing is for goods trains to go to Bundar goods shed termination point. The problem with this level crossing is that the closure does not happen at a regular time everyday unlike at crossings at other places.
A regular user on the spot is a witness to this daily chaos and tension. He says there are no timings and it’s the uncertainty of crossings that people are worried about. Auto-rickshaw drivers, says: The gate closes for a minimum of 20 to 45 minutes by which time the vehicle queue would have reached till the Police HQ on the north side, which is about half-a-kilometre and up to Mnagaladevi on the other side too.
A resident of nearby Subhasnagar, says that it takes nearly a good 10 to 20 minutes of one’s valuable time waiting for the clearance of the red signal. Though the goods train passes to goods shed termination point or in the opposite direction, they take at least 10 minutes to open the gates. In the meantime, the serpentine queue of two wheelers and four wheelers increases, creating traffic jam.
Most are of the view that when the gates are closed at the level crossing and there is still time for the arrival of the train, some bikers try to push their vehicles under the closed gate and cross the railway tracks. This is dangerous. They are playing with their life. And when the gates are opened, then once again the two-wheelers and four-wheelers try to cross the railway tracks in a hazardous manner causing traffic rage. Vehicles on the left lane will go to extreme right side blocking the road for vehicles coming from opposite side. All are in a hurry, no discipline or patience for safe regulations.
Also, the road is bad and not repaid for a year and in a hazardous condition from Head Post Office to Hoige Bazar, this is rad that is on a regular bus route and frequently used by educational institutions, resident and industry on this road. the very heavy loaded lorries from and to the Good shed is a dangerous and bad situation too.
Traffic police need to have some arrangement to solve this problem and to take stern action against those riders who break the railway and traffic rules. He also suggests that dividers can be put so that vehicles do not switch tracks and create further chaos. The Railways too could put in place a system so that public would know in advance about the likely closure timing. A railway official admitted that it was an issue and expressed helplessness to solve the issue in the near future. The timings of goods trains are highly unspecific. Only after they arrive, we know that they have arrived. It’s a problem, we agree. We’ll try to evolve a system to notify public in advance, but could not give a reassurance. Mahakalipadpu level crossing still continues to disrupt the normal life of residents of Mangaladevi, Jeppu area with no proper under or over pass, now it’s the turn of residents of Mangaluru South - Pandeshwar / Rosario area.
