Mangaluru, Jan 30, 2018: Abdul Majeed who tried to rescue Deepak Rao of Katipalla and Shekhar Kulal who had rushed to help Abdul Basheer of Akashbhavan soon after they were attacked by assailants recently, were honoured by presenting them with a cheque for Rs 50,000 each at a ceremony held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on January 30, Tuesday.
P Vilas Kumar, an advocate from Gulbarga donated the cheques to the duo who through their humanitarian gesture have proved that caste, creed and religion will never come in the way while helping a man in distress. As the donor Vilas Kumar could not come personally all the way from Gulbarga he had sent the cheques to the district administration along with a letter.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar handed over the cheque to Abdul Majeed who also happens to be Deepak’s employer while DCP Hanumantharaya handed over cheque to Shekhar Kulal, an ambulance driver.
Abdul Majeed who spoke on the occasion, said he still has the pain of not being able to save the life of Deepak Rao who was working for him since seven years.
Shekhar who also spoke, recalled the incident when he spotted Basheer lying in a pool of blood on the night of Jauary 4. He also revealed how he had chosen to go via Kottara Chowki that night instead of a route which he used always.
DCP Hanumantharaya said such acts of kindness and helpfulness are worth emulation and added if necessary the names of those who helped the victims would not be revealed.
