Mangalore, Feb 3, 2014: Renowned feminist and research scholar Dr Gayatri V Navada and senior writer and organiser Sheela K Shetty Ermal have been chosen for the coveted Veerarani Abbakka Awards for the year 2014-15.
The Awards instituted by the Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Samithi, Ullal will be conferred on February 18, by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the valedictory of the two day Veerarani Abbakka Utsava 2014 to be held at Government PU College premises, Kurnadu in Mudipu of Bantwal taluk.
This was informed to reporters here on February 3, Monday by office bearers of the Abbakka Utsava Committee including J Jayaram Shetty, Reception Committee President, Sadananda Bangera, Honorary Vice President and Dinaker Ullal, Working President.
They informed that District in-charge Minister Ramanatha Rai, Health Minister UT Khader, Nitte University pro-chancellor Dr Shantharam Shetty and other dignitaries will participate in the function.The awards carry cash prizes of Rs 20,000 each apart from a citation.
Dr Gayatri Navada who has served as Research Scholar at the Regional Study Centre for Performing Arts in Udupi, has two Ph.D degrees to her credit. She has authored several articles and literary works including ‘Mookajji Baduku Sahitya. ‘Chittara Bareda Baduku’ and “Muddanana Ramashwamedham.”
Another awardee Sheela K Shetty is not only a Yakshagana artiste but also an organiser. Through the Srinidhi Mahila Yaksha Kalaranga she has been training interested girls in Yakshagana and has presented over one hundred shows across the stat and in other states. She has also given performances in Akashavani and Door Drashan and is also a good writer.
Shetty has also been serving as President of Federation of Udupi Taluk Mahila Mandali since the past 18 years.
