Mangaluru, Dec 22, 2018: "Sarvodaya means upliftment of all while Swarajya means not just political freedom but also self-governance. Mahatma Gandhi had wished that every citizen of India opted for self-governance," said Dr Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and Visiting Professor of ITT Gandhinagar and Michigan State University.
He was delivering a special lecturer on "Swaraj and Sarvodaya : A re-look" on Friday at the Ravindra Kala Bhavan of University College.
"Though Gandhiji and Ambedkar had several differences, it was Gandhiji who made a strong case to have Ambedkar in the cabinet of the first government of Independent India. It was the result of this that India could have a secular Constitution. The truth is that Gandhiji and Ambedkar shared a great bonding despite differences, "he said.
On assassination of Mahatma Gandhiji, he said "Gandhiji had expected such an attack. For him death was not a defeat, a sacrifice was also a form of success," he added.
"Gandhiji who had dedicated his life for the nation had little time for his family. He rarely met his grandchildren but whenever he met he fully enjoyed their company," said Rajmohan.
He recalled how Kasturba saved Gandhiji’s life several times. He turned emotional when he revealed how Gandhiji fell severely ill in 1919. When doctors advised him to drink milk, it was Kasturba who managed to give goat’s milk to Gandhiji who had earlier vowed not to consume milk, Rajmohan said.
Dr Rajmohan Gandhi’s wife Usha Gandhi, Dr Vivek Rai, former VC of Hampi University, Dr Kishori Nayak, Dean of Kala Nikaya, Dr Uday Kumar, Principal of Mangaluru University College and others were present.
