Udupi, June 13, 2016 : In a case of email hacking, a customer of Korangrapady branch of Vijaya Bank lost Rs 2.35 lakhs in a matter of a few minutes.
According to reports the NRE account holder Melwyn D’Costa had initially sent an email to his bank seeking to transfer of Rs 2.35 lakhs to his wife’s account on June 7 stating she needed it for her treatment purposes. The bank staff had acted accordingly.
Meanwhile, the bank received another email the same day from Melwyn asking it to transfer an equal amount t o Account No. 629205502043 held in the name of Pawan Singh in ICICI bank Chandni Chowk branch New Delhi. It is learnt, the bank staff, without re-confirmation with the account holder had transferred the amount, while the fact was that someone had hacked the account and sent the email.
Melwyn has now lodged a complaint at Udupi Police Station.
