Foundation accuses unfair denial of Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor post to scholar Assadi

Mangaluru, March 10, 2024: The Sayyid Abdul Rahiman Bafaki Thangal Foundation has alleged that the post of prestigious position of Vice-Chancellor at Mangalore University was unfairly denied to renowned professor and scholar Muzaffar Assadi, despite his ranking first on the list submitted by the government.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the Foundation’s General Secretary, A S Ebrahim Kareem Kadaba, stated their intention to seek expert opinions and explore legal avenues to contest the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor for Mangaluru.

Mr Kareem explained that the state cabinet had submitted separate lists, each containing three names, for the appointment of Vice-Chancellors across universities in the state. Professor Assadi’s name was positioned at the top of the list for Mangalore University. However, his candidacy was disregarded during the selection process. The Foundation suspects foul play, viewing this as a possible attempt to conceal ongoing irregularities within the university over the past years.

He further noted that Professor Assadi’s candidacy was also overlooked for the position of Vice-Chancellor at Kuvempu University, despite being recommended for the role.

Highlighting Mangalore University’s decline, Kadaba pointed out that the institution, initially achieving a Grade A rating in the NAAC ranking since its establishment in 1980 under Professor Sheikh Ali’s leadership, has now dropped to Grade B. Additionally, the university is grappling with financial constraints, struggling to meet the payroll of both teaching and non-teaching staff. He also mentioned a recent raid by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at the university.
