Mangaluru, Jan 25, 2015 : Former election commissioner SY Quraishi has regretted the fact that the political parties were still using money to lure voters during election despite the Election Commission seizing as much as Rs 1000 crore from different political parties during the previous general election.
Speaking at the National Voters Day programme held in the city on January 25 under the aegis of the District Administration, Quraishi said the Election Commission has failed to solve the problem of use of money power during elections despite much efforts. However, the problem can be solved if people stop accepting money from parties during election time.
He said as many as 12 crore new voters were enrolled in the last five years due to persistent efforts by the Election Commissioner. He said he was also happy to note that five crore young people have enrolled themselves in the voters list in 2014 alone.
AB Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner who also addressed the gathering said DK was in the top of the list of districts which registered maximum turnout.
MG Uma, Principal District and Sessions Judge presided over the function. Tulasi Maddineni, ZP CEO, Dr SD Sharanappa, SP, Hepshiba Rani Korlapati, MCC Commissioner and several others were present on the occasion.
