Belthangady, Mar 11, 2014: Over 55 students of the Pre and Post Matric girls hostel at Belthangady have been hospitalised after they fill ill due to food poisoning. If 35 girls were admitted to hospital on March 9. Sunday, 20 more children too had to be hospitalised on March 10, Monday.
Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahin and Belthangady MLA Vasanth Bangera were among others who visited the hospital and enquired the health of the students. They also visited the hostel and inspected its conditions.
Though the Taluk Hospital faced shortage of space to accommodate so many number of patients owing to the ongoing construction works, bed arrangements were made for the ill students and additional medical officers sand nurses were deputed to duty from Naravi, Ujire and Mundaje at the request of the district administration.Even doctors from Wenlock Hospital and KMC Hospital have visited Belthangady to provide treatment to the children.
The samples of the food served to the students have been sent for lab tests.
District in-charge Health Officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao, Dr Kala Madhu, Taluk Medical Officer and others have visited the hospital.
Probe urged : Meanwhile, the Dalit Rights Action Committee of Belthangady have demanded a high level probe into the incident It also alleged that children residing in hostels run by the government were ill-treated by not offering them nutritious food resulting in health problems.
There is a need to hold meetings with parents of the children to discuss the problems at the hostel, the Samithi said.
