Food Safety department bans 70 coconut oil brands in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 19, 2018 : Barely days ahead of the holiday season, the Commissioner of Food Safety in Kerala has issued orders banning the manufacture, storage and distribution and sale of as many as 70 brands of coconut oil in the state. Commissioner Anand Singh claimed that the ban was imposed after oil brands in question were found supplying a "substandard and adulterated" product which had the presence of other cheaper oils, The Times Now reported.

 

Officials with the state’s Food Safety department on Tuesday told media personnel that while these oils have not been deemed ’unfit for human consumption’, laboratory testing proved that these products did not meet quality standards as prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Coconut oil ban

Adding to the claims, a senior member of the department asserted that some of the products which fall under the purview of the ban met quality standards but were in violation of labelling norms. One such example cited by the Food Safety department is a product label which says that "coconut oil does not contain trans fat", a factually incorrect that amounts to making misleading claims.

Palakkad-based Kera Hira Coconut Oil, Thrissur-based Brilliant Grade One Agmark Coconut Oil, Assanvilla-based StS Kera Premium Gold Coconut Oil are some of the brands which have been banned as per the orders issued by Commissioner Anand Singh. The department had imposed a ban on 45 brands of coconut oil in May of this year followed by a ban on another 51 brands in June. With the latest order in effect, the total number of coconut oil brands banned in Kerala stands at 170.
