Mangaluru, March 10, 2016: The acts of controlling traffic in the scorching heat, walking miles delivering letters or cleaning the city roads in all seasons and such other occupations, were duly recognized at the International Women’s Day celebrations at Besant Women’s College in the city on Tuesday, March 8.

The unique programme organized by Centre for Integrated Learning in association with Besant Women’s College and Inner Wheel Club of Mangalore North, felicitated Municiple worker A Chandravathi, Post Women Kusuma Kumari, Traffic Constable Spoorthi Hegde, Home Guard Trisha and fisher woman Umavathi to celebrate the spirit of womanhood on the occasion.

The inter-collegiate elocution event on the topic “Achieving Gender Parity : Recommendations from Youth” added value to the deliberations. The event was supported by Big Bazaar and VLCC as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Inaugurating the event, Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation, Jacintha Vijay Alfred exhorted the girls to forge ahead with determination and commitment to achieve their goals and not be hesitant or cowed down by low self esteem. Women have achieved feats which was some time ago thought to be only a male domain and today, women was taking strides with their male counter parts in all spheres of socio-economic activities, she remarked, adding that a woman assumes several roles and responsibilities both in personal and professional endeavours.

Honouring the unsung heroes, renowned medical practitioner working for women’s causes, Dr. Rathi Devi categorically remarked that women were in no way, both physically and mentally inferior to their male counterparts and that it was only in an issue of mind set. She listed out the dos and don’ts for girls which included life style issues, dressing sense and openness to fight harassment of any kind.

Secretary of Besant Institutions, Shamsundar Kamath, Correspondent Devanand Shenoy, Principal Sulochana Narayan, President of Inner Wheel Club of Mangalore North Sheela Jayaprakash, former District Chair Person Mitra, Executive Director of Centre for Integrated Learning, Sachitha Nandagopal among others were present on the occasion.
