Farmers favour supply of sugarcane to Brahmavar sugar factory

Udupi, Oct 1, 2014 :  The annual general meeting of Brahmavar sugar factory which was held here discussed issues at length pertaining to the factory, farmers, funds and loans. The meeting was held under the leadership of Brahmavar Sugar Factory chairman Jayasheela Shetty. Farmers who worked for Brahmavar sugar factory said that if the factory resumes functioning, they would grow sugarcane to supply the raw material to the factory.


Bramavar sugar factory 1The farmers are of the opinion that as the Varahi irrigation project is turning out to be a reality, it would be better to strive for the revival of the factory.  They also demanded that the land wherein the factory is situated should be utilized only for the purpose of sugar factory and nothing else.   Factory Vice Chairman Kudi Srinivas Bhat said the factory could be revived only if the farmers start growing the sugarcane. He said the farmers should come up with the idea of the probable quantity of the sugarcane, which could be grown by them.

Jayasheela Shetty said the factory and the land area has been protected since years, as there was an administrative board to look into the affairs. The debate over the revival of the factory is being considered and talks were held with the administrative set up and people’s representatives. The farmers opinion is being considered.  He added that the farmers could opt for modern technologies to grow the sugarcane. Brahmavar Sugar Factory chairman said the salaries were paid as well as the pending deposits of the primary cooperative societies.

The unanimous decision taken by the farmers in the meet supported the revival of the sugar factory. They said that the factory can be restored by taking government support in financial matters.
