Mangalore, Feb 17, 2014 : After six long years of wait, the families of the 7 children who met a tragic end in the Ulaibettu school bus tragedy, received a compensation of Rs 5.5 lakhs from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. The compensation was distributed by Mangalore North MLA Moidin Bava on February 16, Sunday.
The mishap had occurred on August 14, 20008 when students of the Bami English Medium School of Gurupur Kaikamba were on way to school in a mini bus on Independence Day even.The driver lost control over the vehicle and the bus rolled into the overflowing Phalguni river. A total of eleven persons including six children had died in the mishap. One person who tried to save them was also injured. The public had rescued over 25 others.
Though the funds were sanctioned much earlier, it had lapsed as the beneficiaries did not have valid documents.
It was only after several appeals to Union ministers Oscar Fernandes, Veerappa Moily and other leaders that the Finally after much pressure on Socer Moily and other leaders it was possible to get the funds, said Bava.
The families of the deceased have already got Rs one lakh each while the injured got Rs 50,000 from the state government.
