Endosulfan victims’ houses to get solar power soon

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Feb 18, 2016 : Interacting with media on the sidelines of solar credit camp organised jointly by the district administration, Nabard and the Lead Bank in the City Feb 17, MLC Ivan D’Souza said that 40 endosulfan victims houses in Perabe in Puttur taluk will get solar power shortly.

Endosulfan victimsThe MLC said "Installation of solar panels for at least two lights, one fan and a mobile charger in the houses has been taken up at a cost of Rs 8.36 lakh, under the MLC fund," he promised to urge Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to announce a special fund in the budget to make Dakshina Kannada a solar-powered district.

The State government should take up a pilot project to make the district self-sufficient in energy consumption by tapping solar energy, he added.

The 10 KW-capacity roof-top solar generation unit installed by MLC Ivan D’Souza - at his residence at Valencia at a cost of Rs 7.5 lakh - is generating 1,381 unit of electricity per month. "The consumption of electricity is 740 unit per month. Mescom credits Rs 7,000 per month to my account," he said.

Lead bank Manager Raghav Yajamanya said that the banks are lending loans for implementing a ’grid-connected rooftop and small solar power plants programme’ to encourage installation of rooftop systems for solar power generation.

"The State Government has in its policy provided for net metering arrangement and has provided relatively high rates for buy back for power at Rs 9.56 (without subsidy) and Rs 7.20 (with subsidy). Once the owner of the house gets feasibility certificate from Mescom to install rooftop solar power plant, the banks will assess the financial aspect and will lend loan within two days. The installation process will be completed within 11 days of filing applications," he informed.

Speaking about loans, the manager said, "The rate of interest will be at the base rate up to a loan of Rs 5 lakh. The rate of interest for the loan beyond Rs 5 lakh will be decided by the board of the banks. At present, the loan will be given for the owners of the residential property and not for individual flat owners. In case of flats, the flat association can go for lighting on the periphery of the apartment and for lifting water from the well using solar panels."

"The Lead bank has set a target to generate 1,000 applications by end of this financial year through the 300-odd bank branches in the district. Against a few inquiries that the banks were receiving for the installation of solar roof top units, the banks receive more than five times the application now. The cost involved in generating one KW of power ranges from Rs 70,000 to Rs 90,000," Yajamanya explained.
