Dumping garbage along highways in DK, serious action

Mangaluru, May 19, 2017: It is reported that DK, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat chief executive officer (CEO) Dr M R Ravi said a patrolling team has been constituted to check those who dump solid waste beside the national highway and state highway in the district.  Those who dump garbage are likely to get a notice to their address.


garbage 1The Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat has decided to initiate legal action to check the menace of dumping garbage beside the road, which causes public nuisance.

Under the guidance of the zilla panchayat chief executive officer, a five-member patrolling team led by taluk panchayat executive officer (EO), Karnataka State Pollution Control Board official will patrol on the national highway and state highway between 6 am and 8 am.

"If any one found dumping the garbage, then the team will capture them on camera along with the vehicle number and later write to the RTO to initiate action against the owner of the vehicle under Motor Vehicles Act Section 177.

In addition, a case will be filed in the assistant commissioner’s court under Section 133 in the Code Of Criminal Procedure, for creating public nuisance, wherein notice will be served to the violator," Ravi said.

He said the move is to create awareness and also warn the general public not to dump the garbage beside the roads and thus contribute to the cleanliness of the district.

The patrolling team has already started patrolling in the district. On Tuesday, it had patrolled in Moodbidri and on Wednesday, it had patrolled in Konaje. Solid waste is being dumped beside the roads in 35 gram panchayats in the district.

The public dump these wastes on both sides of the road at night, causing nuisance to the people living in the vicinity and polluting the area. "It has become a big headache for us," the CEO said. Ravi said that he has directed panchayat development officer (PDOs) to install CCTV cameras on the strategic locations as well. The zilla panchayat will also seek the support of Transport department and police in its move to make the district clean.

The zilla panchayat chief executive officer said that Ramakrishna Mission has approached zilla panchayat seeking its support to take up cleanliness drive in rural areas as well. The zilla panchayat is working out regulations.
