meera chandrashekhar14jan19Udupi, Jan 19, 2014: Meera Chandrashekhar, an old student of MGM  College, Udupi and  presently a professor of Physics and Astronomy and Curators’ Teaching Professor of Physics at the University of Missouri  has won the prestigious 2014 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching given by the Baylor University.

The Award carries a cash prize of $250,000 and an additional $25000 for the Physics Department of the University of Missouri.

Meera did her BSc in Physics and Mathematics from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College of Udupi in 1968.  She later did her Masters in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology in Madras in 1970 and Brown University in 1973. She earned a PhD in physics from Brown University in 1976. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Max-Planck-Institut in Germany, she joined the University of Missouri in 1978.

She will be teaching at Baylor’s University, one of the foremost Christian University of Texas during 2015 spring semester.

Dr Meera Chandrashekhar is also a recipient of several awards including 2006 President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching from the University of Missouri, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Technology, Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 1985 and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring from the National Science Foundation in 1998.
