Domestic Violence on the increase in DK - Cases exceed 950

Mangalore, June 04, 2014: In a steep increase in domestic harassment and violence in DK district,  total of  abuse of women, child trafficking, child marriage, dowry harassment,  sexual assault  and the like have been registered in the district.  of  these  465 cases have been disposed in the offices of the respective taluk child development project officers, said Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim.

DC IbrahimThe DC is also the chairman of the district-level committee to curb domestic violence, was chairing a meeting at his office on June 2.  He explained,  394 cases have been referred to the courts of which the court has passed judgement in 181 cases, while 214 cases are still pending. He directed the officials to work efficiently to prevent child marriages and all such atrocities which are very prevalent among minority and backward communities in rural areas particularly.

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim also ordered Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director Gatrude Veigas to organise gram sabhas for a period of one month starting from June 15, to create awareness about the importance of family good relations and harmony.

A new committee is set up to monitor and prevent violence against women and children. The district-level committee is headed by the deputy commissioner, while the superintendent of police, district health and family welfare officer, district social welfare officer, public instructions department deputy director, district public prosecutor and one representative each nominated by the DC from two organisations will be the members.

Drug awareness :  A meet  of the district level anti-drug abuse committee held by  the deputy commissioner, he expressed concern over the increasing instances of students becoming  victims of drug abuse and stressed on the need to create awareness among students and parents.  He strictly advised officials to initiate best measures to create awareness in schools and colleges in the form of quiz, essay, debate, drama, street plays and other innovative means. 

Prajna Counselling centre, Link De-addiction Centre and other  Rehabilitation Centres  have come forward to organise camps on de-addiction in the district. No efforts are to be spared in this vital matter.
