Mangaluru,Feb 28, 2020: Diwaker, Corporator of Cantonment Ward is the new Mayor of Mangaluru while Kulai Corporator Vedavathi is the Deputy Mayor. The much awaited election to the two posts were held on February 28, Friday.
The Congress had fielded Keshava as its candidate. While Diwaker bagged 46 votes including the votes of two MLAs, Keshava managed to get 15 votes including the vote of MLC Ivan D’Souza.
The Congress had fielded Zeenath Shamshuddin for the election to the post of Deputy Mayor. Vedavathi of BJP secured 46 votes while Zeenath bagged 17 votes.
The two SDPI corporators Muneeb Bengre and Shamshad Aboobakker who remained neutral in the election to the post of Mayor, however voted for Zeenath in the Deputy Mayor election.
Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru North MLA Bharath Shetty, Deputy Commissioner Sindhu P Rupesh, MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar, Election Officer and Mysuru zone Regional Commissioner V Yashwanth were present among others.
Standing Committee Members were also elected on the occasion.
