Department of Collegiate Education bans public events at Mangaluru colleges

model code of conductMangaluru, March 31, 2024: The Department of Collegiate Education (DCE), Mangaluru division, has issued a directive prohibiting the organization of public events at colleges due to the current enforcement of the model code of conduct (MCC). This decision aims to forestall any potential breaches of the MCC, particularly amid concerns that college events could inadvertently entangle political figures.

Furthermore, the DCE has clarified that it will not authorize any off-official-duty (OOD) leave for lecturers to participate in workshops or conferences.

Deviprasad, the special officer at the DCE, Mangaluru division, explained that the directive was prompted by recent instances where college events were found to have political undertones. One such event, organized by an aided college affiliated with a political party, raised eyebrows. Additionally, another event, though primarily literary, also encroached upon the MCC to some degree. Subsequently, the DCE was required to furnish an explanation to the Election Commission. To avert similar occurrences in the future, the decision was taken to suspend all events until the MCC is lifted. Colleges have been advised that they can still conduct their internal academic programs.

Some aided colleges have expressed discontent, noting that the MCC will remain in effect for two more months. They argue that this duration dissuades colleges from hosting their regular annual events.
