Mangaluru, Dec 25, 2016: Union Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar inaugurated the new Block of KMC Hospital in Mangaluru on December 25, Sunday. The new block which is equipped with state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary facility will cater to people with different ailments, thus ensuring continued access to world class treatment to the people of Mangaluru. The new block also has the IBM Watsons for Oncology.  The super computer uses artificial intelligence as a tool for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Speaking on the occasion, Parikkar lauded KMC Hospitals for rendering   excellent healthcare service to the people.  He also called upon the hospital to go in for cashless system. The Defence minister further stressed the need to offer affordable healthcare to the poor. To help the poor and the needy was one of the important messages given by Jesus Christ whose birthday we are celebrating today, he said.

In his key-note address, Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University said the hospital ensures the best of treatment to all patients who approach it and added that no patient was turned away for want of funds. He said under the Manipal Arogya Scheme  people belonging to BPL families used to get a cover upto Rs 30,000 and  that the amount has now been increased to Rs 50,000.

State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies  UT Khader, Chairman of Manipal Hospitals Dr H Sudarshan Ballal, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA JR Lobo, Chairman of Manipal Global Education  T V Mohandas Pai, Medical Superintendent Dr Anand Venugopal and others were  present.

Manipal Hospitals’ partnership with IBM Watson for Oncology remains the first deployment of Watson in India and second hospital in the world to use this facility.
