Deep-sea study MIT students get deep feel

Manipal, Dec 19, 2019:  On the initiative of the Government of India to motivate young postgraduates to take up oceanographic research a hands-on trip was organised by the CMLRE- Kochi, a research laboratory owned by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (CMLRE), Government of India. A team of 11 MSc Geology students of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) got a unique opportunity to get deeper experience in sediment and organic matter sampling techniques on-board the Fishery Oceanography Research Vessel Sagar Sampada.

The students were taken on a cruise off Kochi port for about 70 km in the Arabian Sea and were shown how the scientists obtained deep sea-bed sediment samples for studies on past climate, geology and fishery sciences.

The team was led by Dr K Balakrishna, Professor of Geology in the Department of Civil Engineering at the MIT, Manipal.
