Mangaluru, June 13, 2017: Mangalore Cycling Club’s (MACC) WhatsApp group for over three years has been promoting and conducting some top class cycling sorties in and around the city.
One dedicated well known cyclist regularly messages calling the enthusiasts to the starting point even before the Sun starts out . The dedicated human here is MACC’s strong pillar, Anil Shet, for whom being off the saddle early in the morning is unthinkable.
Many exemplary reasons exist for Anil Shet’s perseverance for cycling— one good one are health benefits the activity offers. Having come out of medication for high blood pressure and reduced weight by about 20 kg, he is committed to push others to the activity. While chasing health benefits, Anil Shet silently clocked 35,000 km on the saddle between February 2014 and May 2017 that is recorded on fitness app Strava. Perhaps he is the only person in Mangaluru with such a mileage credit, Shet says. He tweeted that he had led a sedentary life since childhood till his engineering graduation from MIT, Manipal and even after. His poor habits had led him to high BP at 33 when he weighed 100 kg. He had to indulge in some physical activity and chose cycling.
A new Mountain Terrain Bike in tow, Anil Shet began his honeymoon with cycling. His first day started with another cyclist Shabari, who took him on a flat route towards Tannirbhavi, though Anil wanted to return just after 4 km. He was coaxed and finally Anil Shet could come back from Tannirbhavi on his bike itself. However, there was no more looking back.
A ride to Tannirbhavi became his daily routine, Godfrey Pinto, an ace cyclist of Mangaluru, joined Anil in MACC and made him step up rides beyond 20 km on flat roads to rides beyond 100 km on uneven terrains. Consistent riding had a positive impact on losing weight and one day he could be off from regular medication for high BP. With fellow MACCers, he instituted Brevet—long distance rides of distance in multiples of 100 km that have to be completed within a specified time-frame. He has completed 200, 300, 400, and 600 km rides in one season, making him a “Super Randoneur” along with few others. He invites more good people to join in - now is the time.
