Mangalore, Feb 28: The Dakshina Kannada Dalit Seva Samithi of Vittla organized a protest in front of the DC’s office on Feb 28, Monday, during which they demanded the immediate introduction of city buses.

District Secretary S. P. Anand said that the statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, which is located in front of the Vidhana Soudha, should not be moved. He also demanded 1 acre of land and funds for the construction of the Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hall in Vittla.


B. K. Sesappa Bedrakadu, the district president, said that the local people should be given job opportunities in the Karnataka State Regional Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and that the vacancies available in these organizations should be filled with promotions. Sincere officers who have worked for the development of KSRTC’s Mangalore Division should be granted opportunities to work for one more year, he said.


The protestors warned that they will launch a hunger strike in front of the Vittla office on March 31, 2011 if their demands are not considered.


The protestors marched from the office of the Vittla Dalit Seva Samithi from 8:00 a.m. on Feb 28 and reached the DC’s office at 6:30 p.m. Around 200 people participated in this protest.


Shri Shri Shashikanth Mani Swamiji of Kanyana inaugurated the jatha in Vittla. Secretary Chandrashekar, Honorary President Bhanuchandra Krishnappa, and Monappa were also present.


The protestors also submitted a memorandum to DC Subodh Yadav on the occasion.
