DYFI protests against privatization of Wenlock Hospital

Mangalore, Jan 20, 2014: The Dakshina Kannada district committee of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a day long dharna in front of DC Office on Jan 20, Monday demanding to withdraw the privatization of Wenlock Hospital and establishment of District medical college.


Addressing the protestors, Muneer Katipalla president of district DYFI said that even though the district administration have handed over the maintenance in charge of Wenlock Hospital to KMC Hospital, the hospital still lack the quality service and adequate facilities.

He also said that the nearly 17,000 posts in the state is being vacant in the health department and government hospitals, but still the government hospitals are being privatized, without strengthening them. He urged the district administration to take strict against the privatization of Wenlock hospitals at any cause.


Muneer said that at present, the governments as well as private hospitals are functioning to give treatment for the patients based on their financial status. The Wenlock hospital was meant for the poor people, who could not afford adequate facilities in the private hospitals, but such kind of decision, by the state government have put poor in problem. The district administration must implement uniform rate system in all hospitals in the district, he said.


He also said that the hospital must avoid conducting unnecessary medical tests for the poor patients.
The Government must establish a government medical college in the city. The Wenlock hospitals must utilize the amount of Rs 1 lakh each taken from the students of various medical colleges deposited during their internship.


Criticizing health minister U T Khader, Muneer said that instead of resolving the health problem in the state, minister is very much interested on working for private hospitals in the state.


The protesters warned the state government to fulfill their demands or would stage massive protest along with labour groups and progressive groups in the coming days.

 

DYFI secretary Dayananda Shetty, city committee president Imthiyaz BK and CPI(M) district secretariat member Vasanth Achari were present.
