Mangalore, Oct 11: The Democratic Youth Front of India (DYFI) staged a road block on Oct 11, Monday demanding the immediate repair of roads in Bajal, Padil, Yekkur, and Jeppinamogaru, which have remained untouched and unrepaired for the past several years.
Traffic was blocked for a long time and the owners of vehicles and drivers stopped their vehicles also supported the members of the DYFI. A protest rally was also organized from Pakkaladka to Kermar Railway Gate, a distance of 2kms.
Sunil Kumar Bajal delivered a protest speech in which he said that the roads of this area resemble a paddy field, yet the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is not bothered about the sorry plight of rural roads in its hurry to concretize the city’s main roads. He added that the residents of Padil, Jeppinamogaru, Bajal, and Yekkur are facing a number of problems owing to the pitiable condition of the roads in this area. He further informed that the roads have been untouched for the past 20 years.
Flaying MCC for its indifference to the plight of the people, he said that the DYFI will intensify its protests if the roads are not repaired at the earliest possible.
Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the commissioner of MCC, sent two engineers Gopal Gowda and Suresh Kumar to the site of the protest at 11 a.m. to assess the situation and to listen to the people’s demands. He later assured that temporary watch work will commence immediately and that the roads will be concretized the following month.
