Mangaluru, July 16, 2016: Acting on specific intelligence that gold bars of foreign origin are being attempted to be smuggled into the country by way of concealing them under the seat of a Spicejet aircraft, the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mangalore intercepted the concerned aircraft on its arrival to Mangalore International Airport and after thorough examination were able to retrieve and seize 22 pieces of gold biscuits, totally weighing 2566.050 grams. The total value of the gold under seizure is placed at Rs.75,26,225/-.
In this connection two employees of Spicejet working at Mangalore International Airport who were a part of the conspiracy and who were helping the smugglers in retrieving the gold biscuits from the aircraft upon its landing at Mangalore have been arrested.
As the conspiracy was unraveled by the officers of DRI, it was found that the gold biscuits sourced from Dubai were concealed in the said Spicejet aircraft during its International run from Dubai to Mumbai by a carrier hired for the job. Thereafter once the aircraft was deployed on its assignment in domestic sector; it operated between Mumbai and Mangalore. It was here that the arrested Spicejet employees who were passing on advance information to the smugglers regarding the itinerary of the aircraft, were found indulged in retrieving the concealed gold biscuits from the aircraft and delivering them outside later on, thus, misusing their position to smuggle gold out from the airport by avoiding customs check all along. They confessed their guilt on interrogation and admitted that they were doing it for the lure of hefty money offered by the smugglers and have already done it on six occasions earlier.
Further Investigation in the matter is under progress.
