Mangaluru, Jan 18, 2017: It was a matter of pride for Department of Social Welfare in Dakshina Kannada on Jan 17, Tuesday, with the launch of a website and equipped hostels with online surveillance system.
The first is a first-of-its kind move, while the second is an attempt to incorporate technology to work at keeping tab on the activities in hostels at the click of a mouse.
Minister for Social Welfare H Anjaneya who launched the website www.socialwelfaredk.com, described it as a good effort and announced to replicate the same in other districts in the state.
Explaining the initiative, Department of Social Welfare deputy director G Santosh Kumar claimed that the closed circuit TV cameras installed at the department-run hostels in the district linked to the web, have come in handy in keeping a tab on each and every wings of the hostels.
"Mobile applications have been provided to taluk-level officers to keep a watch on the hostels in their administration limits at the tap of their cellphones. Besides, SC-ST colonies can be easily located with the help of satellite imagery on the site - another first," as claimed by the officer further.
The officer said, from daily activities to circulars and programmes to information about district and taluk-level officers, all information has been made available online.
Reema from Protes, a web-developing firm associated with the website, said, "The work was launched eight months ago, for collating required materials. With this, the Department becomes the second department in the district after Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) to have an exclusive website."
It will be updated with timely developments as the firm is handed over the task of technical backup.
