Mangaluru, Apr 27, 2018: Dakshina Kannada district has boasted of having the highest literacy rate for quite some time now. But, what about its elected representatives?
Several senior politicians haven’t studied beyond PU, but there are a few who carry good educational qualifications.
Four out of eight legislators who ruled in the past five years, have not studied beyond PU. This includes Mohiuddin Bava, the current MLA from Mangaluru City North constituency who hasn’t completed SSLC, Shakuntala Shetty, sitting MLA from Puttur constituency, who holds a Class X certificate, Vasanth Bangera, a MLA from Belthangady, who has studied up to PU and Sullia’s MLA Angara S, the sole BJP legislator, who is a Class IX dropout.
The other four educated legislators include Mangaluru City South MLA, and former state civil servant J R Lobo who has a BSc and BEd degree. Lobo has previously worked as the commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation.
B Ramanth Rai, the MLA from Bantwal and the district minister is a BA graduate. Ullal MLA U T Khader, has an LLB degree. K Abhayachandra Jain, the MLA from Moodbidri-Mulki constituency, has studied automobile diploma (diesel mechanic) which helps him with the bus business he owns.
New Candidates: The candidates for the upcoming polls are a mixed bag. BJP candidate from Mangaluru City North constituency, Dr. Bharath Shetty, holds a masters degree in dental surgery. Vedavyas Kamath, BJP candidate for Mangaluru City South constituency has a degree in commerce. Madan M C, an Independent candidate, has an MBA which he acquired through distance learning. Muneer Katipalla from CPM however has only studied up to Class VIII.
It is believed that though education is supposed to play a key role in legislators formulating plans and policies, educational qualification doesn’t matter much in reality.
Candidates are only expected to promote party ideology. Political parties in the recent past have been working around the communal vote bank. Hence, the MLAs are expected to buy into the ideology their party believes in. Even peoplelargely vote for a party and not a candidate, it is observed.
