Mangalore, Nov 22: The Dakshina Kannada, Superintendent of Police along with Sub Inspector, Prakash K. of  Special Intelligent squad and the team were successful in grabbing a group six ‘ransom criminals’ in a swift action on  Saturday, November 22. They were plotting to kidnap NRI businessmen and builders to extort money under directions of gulf-based mafia Rakesh alias Althaf, said Gopal Hosur, Inspector general of police, Western range.

In a press briefing IGP, Gopal Hosur on Sunday November 23 said that arrested persons had planned to extort money from many businessmen. The operations against the underworld and anti-social elements will continue as long as they exist.

The persons arrested are all from Coorg District. They are Harish K M (38), Bopanna (20), B S Ashoka (34), A P Jagadeesh (24), residents of Kunjila village., Bopanna (25) and Rajesh (20), residents of Yevakapadi village. These were arrested near Shanthipalke in Mulki police station limits. They were waiting for the businessman to to abduct and extort money. They had planned to kill him if he refused to pay up. They were in a rented  Scorpio to pick up the businessman when the police apprehended them.
They had plans to kidnap a Bangalore based businessman (NRI), who came to Mangalore to attend a wedding at the TMA Pai convention hall a few days agoy. They could no materialize the plan as there werw large crowd in the venue. They had also planned to kidnap Mahesh, a builder in Bangalore, owner of Renown Hotels and Resorts., They could not do it as he had not turned up at the place in Vijayanagar at Mysore.

Rakesh alias Althaf is involved in several cases of kidnap and blackmailing people for ransom in Mangalore, Mysore and Bangalore. Harish K M, one of the accused has a case possesing illegal weapons act registered at Cottonpet Police station in Bangalore. He had obtained bail a few moths back informed the IGP. We are pursuing to arrest Rakesh alias Althaf living in Gulf.
 
A country-made gun, four bullets, a Scorpio vehicle and four mobile phones were seized from the culprits.
The special investigation team comprising Anand, Rama Poojary, Chandrashekar, Sheenappa, Girish Bengre, Sunil, Rajendra Prasad, David D’Souza, Mohammad Iqbal, Shiva Naik and George were present in the press briefing.
