Mangaluru, April 20, 2015: Speaking at a workshop for members of selected Self Help Groups organised by Department of Food & Civil Supplies, Jilla Grahaka Sanghatanegala Okkuta and Women and Child Welfare Department recently DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim exhorted consumer forums to create awareness among people to insist on quality of products. He said that all individuals should be aware of consumer awareness and consumer protection act.
Awareness will prevent any kind of exploitation by traders. Consumers have a right to know complete details on availability of quality products in the market. India is among few countries where the MRP is mentioned on the products.
Very often sellers cheat consumers by charging more than MRP. Consumers should question it. There is need to create awareness about malpractices in weights and measures. Unscrupulous traders use various tactics while weighing through deceptive balance. A small discrepancy in weight is a loss for customer.
Further, Jilla Parishat President Asha Thimmappa Gowda stressed upon the improvement of awareness on consumer rights among women. Awareness programmes should be organised at hobli-level and taluk level to cover a larger section of population. She said SHG members should set up shops to sell produce. Jilla Grahaka Sanghatanegala Okkuta President M J Salian said the Okkuta has started 54 consumer clubs in schools and six in colleges, to create awareness among schoolchildren and college students on their rights. Consumers should raise their voice against injustice. A booklet "Grahakara arivu" was released on the occasion. Food and Civil Supplies Deputy Director Sharanabasappa was present.
