The Deputy Commissioner (DC) in his direction to all concerned officials has asked for the formation of effective taluk level coordination committees and identify weak spots that are vulnerable to the monsoon fury.

He said that emergency teams should also be formed with Home Guards, Firefighting cells, police and other bodies and earmark the deployment of expert swimmers, divers, ham radio operators and so on. He insisted that boats, excavators/cranes, trucks, tools and implements etc... be kept in readiness to meet any eventualities.  Trees branches are to be pruned and drains along the NH cleared and kept free from choking.

In Mangalore city areas the DC said major storm water drains should be marked out and measures be taken to remove silt, garbage etc... that block and prevent free flow of rain water leading to water logging in low lying areas. He also directed city corporation officials to draw up a list of precautions that citizens should take to deal with emergencies.

It was made clear that tahsildars open gruel centres and give adequate relief to distressed individuals, families or groups round the clock. The Deputy Commissioner told officials to notify fishermen not to venture into sea in case of adverse weather warning. All precautions are advised to prevent infection and contamination from dead carcasses  of livestock and other animals. DDPI’s in charge of schools have  been told to make available class rooms in schools for use as emergency shelters. Medical officers, hospitals and doctors were told to see that the monsoon weather will not cause uncontrolled illness - in all matters it was emphasised, prevention and readiness was better than cure.
