“It is an attempt to divide and rule the country. Protests will be staged in all the Assembly constituencies against the NRC and the Citizenship act,” he warned.

MLC Ivan D’Souza said that the citizens of the country should oppose the NRC and the amended Citizenship Act in unity.

Youth Congress President Mithun Rai said, “Within six years of its rule in the country, the BJP is creating rift on the basis of religion. Citizenship on the basis of religion is against the Constitution.”

MLA U T Khader said that any attempt to implement the NRC and the amended Citizenship Act in Karnataka will be protested similar to North India.

“Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa should not give scope for such incidents in the state,” he said, while addressing a protest rally against the NRC and the amended Citizenship Act organised by the District Congress Committee (DCC) in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday.

He said that the Act is against the aspirations of Mahatma Gandhi. “The citizens of the country cannot accept the Act. We will not furnish details to the NRC. We do not need their certificate to prove our citizenship,” he insisted.

He held Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the protests turning violent in different parts of the country. “The duo has been implementing the British-India government’s ‘divide and rule’ policy. The citizens of the country should awaken against this,” he said.
