Udupi: July 28, 2015: The district administration has served a notice to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the district police and a developer, demanding an explanation for cutting the road (national highway 169A) near Syndicate Circle in Manipal for laying a pipeline.
R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, told The Hindu on Monday that the road had been cut near the circle, and water from Manipal area which used to pass through Kundelkadu forest, had been diverted through a pipeline to the stormwater drain, on the other side.
The pipeline had been installed under the road to facilitate repair work below the hillock at Kundelkadu.
He said that no legal permission had been taken for laying the pipeline to divert rain water from Manipal to the stormwater drain running down the hillock.
A joint report by the Udupi municipality, the Public Works Department and the Udupi tahsildar on the laying of the pipeline, the diversion of water to the drain and its consequences, had been submitted to him.
Based on this joint report, he had issued a notice to a developer, the NHAI and the police department and sought their explanation on the matter, Dr. Vishal added
