Court sentences two men to 20 years in jail for raping PUC Student

Posco actMangaluru, May 8, 2019: A POCSO Act court on Wednesday sentenced two accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 for sexually assaulting a PUC student, in March 2015.

The accused – Sachin, a labourer and Mathew, an auto rickshaw driver, forcibly accosted the survivor on the pretext of dropping her home despite her protest. When the survivor asked them to stop the vehicle, the accused ignoring her pleas, took her to a distant ’hillock’ and assaulted her.

The survivor on reaching home narrated the incident to her mother, who filed a complaint with jurisdictional of Belthangady police station. Based on the testimony and evidence, the judge BR Pallavi found the accused guilty of the crime.

Accordingly, they were sentenced under section 376(D) of Indian Penal Code and section 6 of the POCSO Act. The accused were sentensed to 20 years RI and a fine of Rs 20,000 was also imposed of which Rs 18,000 is to be paid to the survivor. In case of non payment of fine, the accused will have to further serve six months in prison.
