Udupi, May 11, 2015 : Police who are investigating into the case of murder of a UPCL worker named Raja Patel (24) have arrested one Subrahmanya(38), also an UPCL worker in connection with the murder of the former. Raja’s body was found amid bushes near Padebettu on May 8.
ASP Santosh Kumar who spoke to reporters here on May 10, Sunday informed that the murder was committed for monetary gains.
The accused Subrahmanya hailed from Nellineedu near Kudremukh. The deceased was from Jeevaragi in Kalaburgi district and was working for UPCL as a contract worker since one and a half years. He was on leave since April 17 as he had to attend a relative’s wedding in his hometown. However when Raja did not reach his hometown, a missing complaint was filed in Padubidri police station on April 25.
The ASP informed that the arrested Subrahmanya has admitted his guilt. He said Subrahmanya has revealed to the police that he had strangulated Raja with a nylon rope and covered his head with a plastic bag while the latter was watching TV at home. Later the same night Subrahmanya covered the body in a polyethylene bag and dumped it in Bikriguttu. He had then left to his hometown and stayed there for a few days before returning to work, Santosh Kumar informed.
It has been gathered that Subrahmanya was under the impression that Raja had huge money but could only find Rs 1300 in Raja’s purse. The police said the accused has also admitted that he had burnt the ATM card and sim card of Raja.
DySP Vinay S Nayak and Kaup Inspector Sunil Nayak were also present at the press meet among others.
