Mangalore, May 29, 2012: The Congress organized a protest demanding the release of Lokayya Poojary, one of its activists, who was arrested on grounds of illegal possession of liquor on May 28, Tuesday.
In his protest address, MLA B. Ramanath Rai, president of the district Congress, said that the police department and the excise department are supporters of the BJP, which has instructed them to arrest Lokayya Poojary.
Alleging that the complaint lodged against Lokayya Poojary in the police station contains false information, he said that Lokayya was arrested only because he refused to pay money when the police blackmailed him.
He further alleged that police constables Pradeep and Rajesh purchased a bottle of liquor and created a false case against Lokayya Poojary. He demanded a thorough investigation and action against the cops responsible for the arrest.
He also alleged that officials of the excise department blackmail innocent people to make extra money.
Speaking on the occasion, even MLA Abhayachandra Jain accused the police of acting as BJP agents, adding that the arrest of Lokayya Poojary is a foul BJP tactic.
