Mangaluru, Mar 03, 2015: A team of doctors at the Unity Health Complex, led by Dr Jalaluddin Akbar has performed a rare and complex surgery to save the arm of a ten year old girl suffering from cancer of the right arm bone. The surgery which lasted for 12 hours was the first such surgery performed in the region.
Earlier, the patient was presented before the Mangalore Institute of Oncology whose Tumor Board decided to perform the complex surgery. The complex procedure involved the removal of the bone and joint of the right arm and reconstruction of the same by taking one of the bone from the leg of the patient.
Dr Jalaluddin said the well equipped state of the art operation theatre in the Unity Health Complex facilitated in conducting the operation. He further stated that performing such type of surgery was unimaginable in India ten years ago and added that such surgeries need expertise as well as infrastructure which are available only in a few select cities including Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad.
Continuing, he said in case of this patient, her arm has been saved and this is possible when patients approach the doctors at an early stage.
The team of doctors who assisted Dr Jalaluddin in this complex procedure are Dr Suresh, Dr Imthiaz, Dr Dinesh Kadam and Dr Mahendra Ullal.
