Mangaluru, Dec 19, 2018 : The sixth Additional District and Sessions Court here has passed a judgement convicting a civil contractor named Manoj Kumar (38) from Karnad near Mulki in the case of cheating a woman of several lakhs of rupees after promising to construct a house for her.
The victim who hails from Nandikur is employed in the national capital. It is learnt, the woman who came across an advertisement displayed by Manoj regarding sale of houses and sites, had contacted him and had expressed her desire to own a house in Mangaluru. She finally chose a nine cents plot at Bappanadu to which the accused said he can help her purchase the land provided he gave her the contract to construct the house.
It is learnt the price of the site and house was fixed at Rs 60 lakh and that the woman had initially paid Rs 50,000 and later Rs 25 lakhs in various instalments.
It is said the accused though built a house did not register the same in the name of the woman but had pledged it. It was also alleged that he had raped her after promising to marry her.
Following a complaint by the woman Manoj was arrested and was released on bail three months later. Though the court declared him guilty of cheating and threatening the woman, he was acquitted in the rape case.
