City police boss invokes ’goonda act’ on notorious rowdy sheeter

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Nov 3, 2014  :  Manoj, allegedly belonging to a Hindu organisation has been booked uneder Goonda Act (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act, 1985).

hithendraMangaluru City Police chief R Hithendra  invoking majesterial powers, has detained Manoj under the Goonda Act against Manoj, 32, a resident of Kodikere, an accused in cases of murder and extortion. Manoj becomes the fourth rowdy sheeter to be booked under the Act in the last one year.

Just a few days back, notorious rowdy Keshava Poojary, 24, was booked under this Act. When Manish Kharbikar, then city police chief had booked one person under the Act. If the advisory board of the High Court ratifies the orders passed by the city police chief, then a person so detained under the Act can be detained in a prison without bail for one-year. The review process (at the advisory board) is usually long winded and effectively puts a hardened criminal out of civil society till the process lasts.

Though Hindu Jagaran Vedike threatened a bandh today Nov 3, they rescinded that move and have decided to take a call on that after due consultation with other like minded organisations and others.
