Kasargod, Nov 23,2016 : In a significant judgment a court in Kasargod has sentenced five persons in the Chervattur Vijaya Bank dacoity case to seven years of rigorous imprisonment apart from a fine of Rs 25 lakh each. The court said that of the total fine amount of Rs 75 lakh will be remitted to the bank. There were a total of seven accused in this case. Of them one person has been acquitted while another one is absconding.
Those who have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment are S Sulaiman(45) of Kushalnagar, Abdul Lathif (39) and Mubashir(21) of Kanhangad, M J Murali (45) of Idukki and Abdul Khader alias Manaf (30) of Chengala. If another accused Abdul Khader of Madikeri has been acquitted on grounds of lack of evidence, Ashraf of Kushalnagar is the absconding accused.
The incident had taken place on the night of September 26. The thieves had gained entry into the bank building by drilling a hole on the ceiling of the first floor. Gold worth Rs 4.775 crore kept in the strong room and Rs 4.9 lakh cash had been stolen. The stolen gold was later traced in an abandoned well and the attic of a house.
The thieves were apprehended within a week of the incident.
